Can you believe it’s that time again? We sure can. 2019 has been an exciting year for us, and I can’t wait to see what comes in the new year. 2020 might not be bringing us the flying cars and teleporter technology we all thought it would, but it is bringing us some pretty sweet design trends. Be prepared to embrace what’s coming with this list below.
One thing that all the sources we checked agree on is that bold text with variable fonts is going to be huge. Already in 2019, this trend had been taking off. We know it’s only going to get bigger in the new year. Look for images and patterns laid inside text for maximum effect in headlines and places of importance. You’ll see more hand-drawn and vintage-inspired fonts, as well. Finally, it appears that with that vintage bent, serifs are coming back. If you fancy some fabulous fonts, it looks like you’ll be sitting pretty in 2020.
What else is coming in 2020? Simplicity. Well, as it turns out, one of the big deals growing in popularity in design is monochrome. Whether a gradient or a simple field of color, choosing one color and sticking with it through a design is the way to go. Better even still if that color is a vivid shade that will catch the eye and keep it there. Think neons (we’ll get back to that later). This trend reaches into the world of illustration, as well. Simple illustrations, line drawings, and isometric 3D illustrations reminiscent of early 3D technology (again, we’ll get back to that later) will be prevalent in design this year.
As much as it hurts to admit it, the retro wave that is sweeping across the world of design and leaving a vibrant neon trail harkens from the late 80s and early 90s. Yes, we’re that old. The great thing about that is everything is riding high on vibes of bright and happy. Retro color palettes, font styles, and designs will be all the rage. Brighten up your designs to follow suit. Righteous!
Grab your buckets. 2020 is going to be all about fluidity. Look for more organic shapes, rounded edges, and natural lines. Add some shiny metallics to those fluid shapes, and you’re sure to be on trend. Get your metallic flow on, and go into 2020 with confidence!
The new year is here, and we’ve got you covered when it comes to what’s hot in 2020. We’re sure this isn’t all that’s coming, but hopefully this will put you ahead of the curve when it comes to the world of design. We’ll be back with our entries on typography and web design in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
